When I saw the news that Germany has announced a ‘historic’ mandatory boardroom quota for women I thought wow, finally some tangible action that may actually lead to real progress. Then I realized that the quota it is proposing is ‘at least 1 woman’ in the boardroom.
Where do I even start on this? With the fact that women are 50% of the world’s population, intelligence & capability but it is ‘historic’ to ensure they have 1 seat at the table?
With the infuriating but predictable ‘what about merit’ comments in response? This is, simply, deep sexism & bias - why do we jump to question merit when 1 woman gets a job, but never question it in any of the men holding virtually all the other positions on the team?
Or should we start by wishing good luck to the women who will get the 1 seat on the male-dominant board & struggle to contribute & perform in that culture? They are sadly going to feel a lot like the woman in this picture - alone and gagged.
As anyone who has read ‘Why Men Win At Work’ knows, I have come to believe in the enforced target approach as the only way to drive change, because gender equality just won’t happen naturally. There are too many invisible, unconscious (and often unintentional) dynamics at play which mean the current state will be an eternal self-fulfilling prophecy without manual intervention.
So this from Germany is the right intention, but the wrong target - by a long way. Equality means 50/50. Anything less is token, patronizing & likely to fail.
