Fashion & Fundamentals

So here we are in 2025 and the role of the women at the UK State visit last week was to wear standout clothes. The BBC reported on Melania’s hat that covered her eyes and matched Trump’s tie, Kate’s golden gown, the Queen’s royal blue dress that matched the King’s sash.

All, apparently, carefully planned by the women to support their men and direct everyone’s attention towards them.

And while the women brought the fashion, the men talked the fundamentals. Ukraine. Palestine/Gaza. Freedom of speech. Trade deals & investments.

I’m so done with it. I’m so done with the images of women looking pretty and playing the role of man’s supporter. I want to see women at the table, discussing the fundamentals - and not just a token woman or two, I want to see them fully represented: 50% of the room so they can really contribute to the conversation and drive towards solutions. Because we know women can do this when we allow them to. But they can’t do it when they’re cast in the role of man’s accessory or assistant. And they can’t do it if the media continues to focus on women playing this role, instead of sharing images and narrative on the important contributions they are making to the world (when they are given the space to).

Let’s get women out of the Fashion Department and into the Fundamentals.
